CST 300 Module 4

 Part 1: My Educational Goals

My time here at CSUMB will be an enriching experience that will prepare me for my career, but I believe it is not enough. My goals are to broaden my experience for myself and for potential employment.  I have some worries because focusing on multiple areas can muddy the water and leave me without enough experience in any of the fields of interest. To combat this, I have chosen to focus on one goal at a time, as of now I am focusing on web development outside of my schooling at CSUMB. The course I am enrolled in is composed of 22 hours worth of material. I am giving myself 3 months total to complete the course, which seems like too much time but due to other responsibilities and obligations, it will honestly take me that long.
Instead of having a set linear path to follow, my goals are branching, which may be counterintuitive in regards to goal setting, but I believe it works well in this case. Once I finish the web development course I'll have to decide if I am going to continue with it by taking a javascript course or leave it (probably indefinitely) to pursue Machine learning and AI.

Part 2: My Career Goals

It's sometimes hard to develop career goals, but it's necessary. I have two set career goals as of now. I would like to become a freelancer, preferably remote due to my travels. In fact, the goal of becoming a freelancer directly impacted my education goal set mentioned above, that being, my taking up web development. From experience and others advice, I believe that web development is an optimal skill in the free-lancing world to have. My other goal consists of video game development, but that is further down the road.

Part Three: ETS Computer Science Test

I'm very nervous, to say the least about taking the ETS test towards the end of the program, but I'll be taking advantage of the sample questions, along with the test outline that was provided. That being said I worry that I will need to practice and study much more if I am going to earn a satisfactory score.

Part Four: Weekly Update

Learning about the different types of claims was interesting, and having the "5 types of claims" PDF will be helpful as a quick guide while working on the Ethics paper next week. I also noticed that I'm having an easier time with this outline than with the previous outline. I'm hopeful that the Ethics paper will run a bit more smoothly in comparison to the Industry Analysis paper.

  1. Hey Severin,
I really like that you have already set out to learn more about the specific area you are interested in. Try not to be too hard on yourself and I'm sure in time everything will all balance out, we are just starting this after all. Web development is definitely a great career path, especially as a freelancer, I wish you the best of luck pursuing it.

  2. Hi Severin,
It is great that you are taking courses outside of this course as well. This will put you a little farther ahead than others will be. I have experience in web development and it has been one of my favorite things to be involved with in the Computer Science field. I love creating a finished product that a user can look at and then interact with. Machine Learning and AI sound pretty interesting as well so I understand why you might go that route as well. You will have time on your side to make decisions as you get closer to graduating. I hope you get to do freelance work and keep traveling like you want to do.

  3. Hi Severin,
I think it's great that you are taking courses outside of the CSUMB program to further develop your skills for future employment. Web development sounds like a great career goal and remote work while freelancing sounds like it would fit your lifestyle very well. We'll be here to support you through group work projects on the CSUMB side of things and would love to hear about your progress along the way. I think that way we can all keep each other motivated.
